Professional Biography




Mohsen Banan is both a skilled engineer and a successful businessman.

Mr. Banan is a software architect and a coder; a tactician and a strategist; a standards politician and a protocol guru; a student of the medium and a leader. He is a recognized expert in the design and implementation of distributed systems, especially message handling systems and mobile data networks. He is particularly well-known for his expertise in data communications, telecommunications and wireless protocols.

And as a businessman, Mr. Banan has owned and managed Neda Communications as a successful and profitable company since 1991. In addition to its financial success, Neda is also a highly innovative industry leader.

Mr. Banan's engineering career began in the early 1980s. Between 1983 and 1991 he worked as an engineer or manager for no less than nine different companies, including Retix, Teltone, Teknekron and Boeing. He then founded Neda Communications in 1991, and so began his business career. He has been President of Neda until the present.

From 1992 to 1995 Mr. Banan played a key role in the formation and direction of the Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD) industry. He led the technical network architecture design for the CDPD specifications, and was also directly involved in many aspects of the planning, development and deployment of the CDPD network services.

Mr. Banan has a long track record of participation in standards related activities. Over the years he has participated in various activities of NIST-OIW and CTIA, and he continues to be an active participant in various IETF activities. He is also the founder of the Free Protocols Foundation, an organization dedicated to the promotion and support of free protocols, software, and services.

Most recently, Mr. Banan is the originator of the radical new concept of Libre Services. He has documented this concept fully in the article titled, Libre Services: A non-proprietary model for delivery of Internet services, and to demonstrate its viability he has implemented it in the form of showcase set of services at www.By-Star.net.

As a result of his visionary work Mr. Banan has accumulated a large body of publications. These include Internet RFCs RFC-2524 and RFC-2188, the monograph Internetwork Mobility (published by Prentice-Hall), and the highly influential industry white papers The WAP Trap and Operation WhiteBerry.

Mr. Banan is also the author of a large body of open-source and free software, most of which is in the form of highly portable and efficient protocol engine implementations. This software is freely available at BySource, Neda's open-source software distribution center.

Mr. Banan holds a BS degree in Electrical Engineering (Magna Cum Laude) from Seattle University and an MS degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Washington.
