This book is about the confession of an arsonist, now claiming to have become a firefighter. To the extent that there is the pretence of Mr. Kermit Roosevelt growing a conscience in his later years, the self absorption of the man makes it all very comical.
As a principal in the 1953 coup that overthrew the democratically elected Iranian prime minister, Mohamad Mossadeq, the author's character of course is well known. Kermit Roosevelt is morally bankrupt and corrupt to the bone.
While the atrocities described in this book have not gotten much exposure amongst the American tax payers who financed them, this book has been well studied by Iranians as a window into the core of the American character -- that of a morally bankrupt, self absorbed bully.
Soon after its publication in 1979, this book was translated into Farsi by Mohammad Eslami under the name of "koodeta dar koodeta" کودتادرکودتا.
To the extent that the book is a confession, it is like an arsonist being proud that he would only set fire to wooden structures as concrete does not burn as well. He goes on to take issue with subsequent CIA crimes and criticizes his bosses for following his pattern. This criminal, Kermit Roosevelt (the author) at no point recognizes that he is a criminal.
Shortly prior to Mr. Kermit's death, the CIA documents titled, "CIA OVERTHROW OF PREMIER MOSSADEQ OF IRAN" were partially published as images. Those documents have been restored and republished as: http://mohsen.banan.1.byname.net/Repub/120004
My conjecture is that the source of that leak was Mr. Kermit Roosevelt.
In terms of quality of writing and quality of thinking, the book is a piece of junk. But, because of various pieces of historic information and the perspective of the criminal perpetrators, a republication is justified.
I dedicate this republication effort to all tax payers to the American federal government who recognize that by being a financier of such atrocities, they have blood on their hand and who are doing something about stopping repetition of such atrocities in future.
